The New Brunswick government has announced a new agreement for the Lake George antimony mine, signaling renewed interest in the site. The deal, touted by officials, is expected to attract investment and create jobs in the region.
Details of the Agreement
The agreement involves a partnership between the provincial government and private investors to reopen the mine, which has been closed for years. According to Natural Resources Minister Mike Holland, the deal includes provisions for environmental monitoring and community benefits. “We’re attracting interest from companies looking to secure critical minerals,” Holland said.
Economic Impact
The mine is expected to produce antimony, a mineral used in batteries and flame retardants. The project could create up to 150 jobs during construction and 100 permanent positions. The government estimates it will contribute $50 million annually to the local economy.
Environmental Considerations
Environmental groups have raised concerns about potential water contamination. The government says it has mandated strict environmental assessments and ongoing monitoring. “We’ve learned from past mistakes and will ensure the highest standards,” Holland added.
