Several blocks of midtown Manhattan were evacuated on Tuesday after structural columns at a high-rise construction site appeared to buckle and crack, prompting fears of a potential collapse. By Wednesday morning, officials declared the building stable and lifted some evacuation orders, allowing residents and businesses to return.
Structural Concerns and Emergency Response
The incident occurred at a 50-story mixed-use development under construction on West 45th Street near Times Square. Witnesses reported hearing loud popping sounds around 3 p.m. Tuesday as steel columns on the 12th floor began to deform. The New York City Department of Buildings dispatched emergency inspectors who confirmed visible buckling in at least four columns.
Mayor Eric Adams said in a press conference that the building’s structural engineer had conducted a preliminary assessment and determined the building was not in imminent danger of collapse. “The building is stable,” Adams stated. “We are taking every precaution to ensure public safety.”
Evacuations and Traffic Disruptions
Authorities evacuated a two-block radius, affecting approximately 3,000 people in nearby offices, hotels, and apartment buildings. Streets were closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic, causing gridlock during the evening rush hour. The New York Police Department set up a perimeter, and the Fire Department deployed aerial ladder trucks to monitor the site.
By Wednesday morning, the evacuation zone was reduced to a single block directly adjacent to the construction site. Residents of the affected buildings were allowed to return, but construction workers were ordered to remain off-site pending a full structural review.
Investigation and Safety Measures
The Department of Buildings has launched an investigation into the cause of the column failure. Preliminary findings suggest that a welding defect may have compromised the steel supports. “We are looking at all possibilities, including material quality and workmanship,” said Buildings Commissioner James Oddo.
The developer, Hudson Yards Development Corp., issued a statement saying they are cooperating fully with investigators and have hired an independent engineering firm to conduct a thorough analysis. “The safety of the public and our workers is our top priority,” the statement read.
Impact on Construction and Local Businesses
The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols at high-rise construction sites in the city. The building’s completion date, originally set for late 2027, is now uncertain. Local businesses reported significant losses due to the evacuation. “We lost a full day of sales, and it’s peak tourist season,” said Maria Torres, owner of a deli near the site.
City officials have promised expedited inspections to allow normal operations to resume as quickly as possible. The Department of Buildings plans to issue a full report within two weeks.
