Children across Canada can hit the links for free during the annual 'Take a Kid to the Course' week, running from July 6 to 12, 2026. The initiative, organized by Golf Canada and the PGA of Canada, encourages families to introduce youth to the sport by offering complimentary green fees and club rentals at participating courses nationwide.
How the Program Works
Participating golf courses will waive green fees for children aged 18 and under when accompanied by a paying adult. Many locations also provide free rental equipment, including clubs and balls, to remove barriers for newcomers. According to Golf Canada, over 1,200 courses across the country have signed up for the program this year, up from 1,100 in 2025.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for families to spend time together outdoors and for kids to discover the joys of golf,” said Kevin Blue, CEO of Golf Canada, in a statement. “We want to make the game accessible and fun for the next generation.”
Growing Participation
The program has seen steady growth since its inception in 2018, with participation rates among youth increasing by 15% over the past three years, according to Golf Canada data. The organization aims to attract 100,000 new junior golfers annually through initiatives like this.
Parents can find a list of participating courses on the Golf Canada website, with options ranging from local municipal courses to private clubs that open their doors for the week. Some facilities also offer free clinics and junior leagues to further engage young players.
Impact on the Sport
Industry experts say such programs are vital for the long-term health of golf. “The average age of golfers is rising, and we need to bring in younger players to sustain the sport,” said Jeff Thompson, a golf industry analyst. “Free-play weeks lower the financial hurdle and create positive first experiences.”
In addition to 'Take a Kid to the Course' week, Golf Canada runs year-round junior development programs, including school clinics and competitive pathways. The organization reports that 40% of junior golfers who participate in free-play events later sign up for full memberships or regular lessons.
