Canucks 2026 Draft: Malhotra, Reid, or Carels at No. 3?

The Vancouver Canucks hold the third overall pick in the 2026 NHL draft, a selection that could be as impactful as any in franchise history. With the San Jose Sharks acquiring the ninth pick, most analysts believe they will use the second overall pick on Swedish forward Ivar Stenberg, leaving the Canucks with three primary options: centre Caleb Malhotra, defenceman Chase Reid, or defenceman Carson Carels.

Caleb Malhotra: The Two-Way Centre with a Famous Father

Caleb Malhotra, a smooth, lanky centre from the Brantford Bulldogs, is widely praised for his two-way game. He comes from an impressive athletic family: his father Manny Malhotra is the Canucks' head coach and a former NHL player; his mother Joann was a standout soccer player; and his uncles Steve and Martin Nash were top professionals in basketball and soccer.

Despite his pedigree, some scouts question whether Malhotra will develop into an elite NHL centre. One scout noted that while he is a very good prospect, he is not a standout. Additionally, the unprecedented dynamic of having his father as head coach presents internal and public challenges. The Canucks must weigh whether selecting him is worth the potential complications.

Chase Reid: The Smooth-Skating American Defenseman

Chase Reid, a defenceman from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, is praised for his smooth skating, offensive flair, size, and strength. Elite Prospects' J.D. Burke said he has been torn between Reid and Carels but recently leans toward Reid: “They’re both exceptionally well-rounded blueliners with high-end tools right across the board, but Reid has an added level of offensive dynamism that I’m not quite sure Carels can match. There’s just such a smoothness to the way he plays the game, too. He already plays the game like a pro.”

Some critics note that Reid's scoring numbers are lower than top defensive prospects in recent seasons, but Burke and others point out that OHL scoring is down 500 goals compared to two years ago.

Carson Carels: The Physical Defenseman with an Edge

Carson Carels, a lanky defenceman from the Prince George Cougars, is in the same class as Reid on most scouting lists. He is not as polished offensively but brings a harder, physical edge to his game. Burke explained: “I think I preferred watching Carels. What he lacks in offensive feel for the game — and it’s not that much, to be clear — he more than makes up for with an in-your-face brand of physical hockey that’s a ton of fun to watch. We didn’t give him the ‘got that dog in him’ badge at Elite Prospects for nothing, either. He’s a real competitor with a knack for emptying the tank on a shift-to-shift basis.”

The Canucks face a difficult decision. All three prospects project as quality NHL players, but the team must determine which one could be truly defining. The draft takes place Friday, and the outcome will shape the franchise's future.
