Free Sunscreen Dispenser Program Expands Across New Brunswick
Free Sunscreen Dispenser Program Expands in New Brunswick

The New Brunswick government is expanding its free sunscreen dispenser program to additional public beaches and parks across the province, officials announced Tuesday. The initiative, which began as a pilot project, now covers more than 20 locations, up from 10 last year.

Program Details and Expansion

The dispensers provide SPF 30 sunscreen free of charge to visitors. Health Minister John Smith said the program aims to reduce skin cancer rates by making sun protection more accessible. “Skin cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer, yet it remains a significant health concern in our province,” Smith said. “By offering free sunscreen, we are removing a barrier to protection.”

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, about 1,000 New Brunswickers are diagnosed with melanoma each year. The program targets high-traffic recreational areas, including Parlee Beach and Irving Nature Park.

Community Response

Local residents have praised the expansion. “It’s a great idea. I always forget to bring sunscreen, so having it available here is really helpful,” said Sarah Thompson, a mother of two visiting Parlee Beach. The program is funded through a partnership between the Department of Health and several non-profit organizations.

Officials plan to monitor usage and expand further if demand continues. The dispensers are refilled weekly during peak summer months.
