Ontario Provincial Police in Barrie have charged four drivers in separate incidents for traveling more than 50 kilometres per hour over the posted speed limit. The enforcement blitz occurred on July 10, 2026, with one driver clocked at 159 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.
Details of the incidents
According to OPP officials, the four incidents took place on different roads within the Barrie detachment area. In one case, a driver was stopped after being recorded at 159 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone. Another driver was caught at 141 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. The other two incidents involved speeds of 136 km/h in a 80 km/h zone and 131 km/h in a 80 km/h zone.
Each driver was charged with stunt driving under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act, which includes immediate licence suspension and vehicle impoundment for 14 days. The drivers also face fines ranging from $2,000 to $10,000 and possible jail time upon conviction.
Impact on road safety
OPP Constable John Smith stated, "Excessive speed is one of the leading causes of serious injury and fatal collisions on our roads. These charges send a clear message that dangerous driving will not be tolerated." The OPP reminds motorists to obey posted speed limits and drive according to road conditions.
According to OPP data, speed-related charges have increased by 12% in the region this year compared to the same period in 2025. The four incidents bring the total number of stunt driving charges laid by Barrie OPP in 2026 to 87.
