Barrie man charged after modified e-bike hits 70 km/h in Innisfil

A 38-year-old Barrie man is facing multiple charges after South Simcoe Police stopped a modified e-bike travelling at 70 km/h in a 50 km/h zone in Innisfil. The incident occurred on July 8, 2026, when officers observed the bike speeding on Innisfil Beach Road.

E-bike modifications violated regulations

Police say the e-bike had been altered to exceed the legal power output and speed limits for electric bicycles under Ontario law. The rider was charged with operating a motor vehicle without insurance, driving without a licence, and operating an improperly modified vehicle. The e-bike was impounded for 45 days.

According to South Simcoe Police, the modifications made the bike legally a motor vehicle, requiring insurance, a licence plate, and a valid driver's licence. The rider did not have any of these.

Growing concern over illegal e-bike modifications

This case highlights a growing trend of e-bike modifications that push them beyond legal limits. Under Ontario law, e-bikes must have a maximum speed of 32 km/h and a motor power of 500 watts. Modified bikes can reach speeds of 70 km/h or more, posing safety risks.

“Modified e-bikes can be dangerous, especially when operated on roads without proper licensing or insurance,” said a South Simcoe Police spokesperson. “We remind all riders to ensure their e-bikes comply with regulations.”

Police are urging the public to report suspicious vehicles and to check their e-bikes for compliance. The investigation is ongoing.
