Three mustard-hued triangles, symbolizing the Rockies, over a U-shaped layer containing two parallel grains—this is Alberta's new official whisky logo, unveiled Monday at True Wild Distilling in Calgary.
New Logo and Regulations for Alberta Whisky
Premier Danielle Smith and Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally introduced the emblem alongside representatives from the Alberta Craft Distillers Association and Spirits Canada. The logo will soon appear on bottles of locally produced whisky, marking a key step in promoting Alberta's spirits industry.
“Distillers are turning Alberta-grown ingredients into something truly special, products that are earning attention well beyond our borders,” Smith told a distillery packed with industry players. “We saw an opportunity that helped success grow, so we worked with industry to join what makes Alberta Whisky stand out in the support of the Alberta Whisky Act.”
The Alberta Whisky Act, passed in May, sets strict rules for the label. To qualify as Alberta whisky, the spirit must meet global standards: aged at least three years in wood barrels, minimum 40% alcohol by volume, all water sourced from Alberta, at least two-thirds of grain from the province, and mashed, fermented, aged, and bottled in Alberta.
Industry and Economic Impact
“It’s the best kept secret that our barley goes to Scotland and our barley goes to Kentucky and Tennessee,” said Minister Nally. “That’s because we truly do have the best grains.” Alberta grains are prized internationally, and the new designation aims to keep more value at home.
Michael Flynn, executive director of Alberta Grains, an industry association for farmers, said, “It’s been a long time coming, and I think everyone’s proud of what has been accomplished.” The move highlights the quality of Alberta’s grains used in spirits.
Alberta Whisky Trail and Tourism
Part of the initiative includes creating the Alberta Whisky Trail, modeled after the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, which features over 60 distilleries. This trail aims to boost tourism and showcase Alberta's distilling heritage.
Nally noted that Alberta whisky producers have won international awards, including Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye and GrainHenge Arrowwood Rye Whisky. The new logo and trail are expected to raise the profile of made-in-Alberta products at home and abroad.
Future Growth for Alberta Spirits
The announcement marks the next step in promoting Alberta whisky and growing the province's spirits industry. With clear regulations and a recognizable logo, Alberta aims to carve out a distinct identity in the global whisky market.
