Exhibition Station experienced a surge of approximately 25,000 extra passengers during Friday's World Cup match in Toronto, according to transit officials. The influx overwhelmed the station's capacity as fans traveled to and from Toronto Stadium for the high-profile game.
Unprecedented Crowds
The sea of red-clad fans heading toward Exhibition GO station after the match created a spectacle, with videos showing massive crowds funneling through the transit hub. The station, which typically handles a fraction of that volume, saw long lines and delays as commuters attempted to board trains.
Transit Response
Metrolinx, the regional transit agency, deployed additional staff and increased train frequency to manage the crowds. However, some passengers reported waiting over an hour to board trains. The agency is reviewing its operations to better handle future large-scale events.
The World Cup match, which drew a sellout crowd, highlighted the need for improved transit infrastructure around Toronto Stadium. City officials have pledged to work with transit agencies to ensure smoother operations for upcoming matches.
