Protect Your Devices Before You Go
Tech expert Avery Swartz has shared essential advice for keeping your devices safe while travelling abroad this summer. With the increase in international travel, the risk of cyber threats also rises. Swartz emphasizes that preparation is key to avoiding data breaches and theft.
Secure Your Passwords and Data
According to Swartz, travellers should update all passwords before departure and use a password manager to store them securely. She recommends enabling two-factor authentication on all accounts. Additionally, backing up data to a cloud service or external drive ensures that important files are not lost if a device is stolen.
Use a VPN for Public Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi networks in airports, hotels, and cafes are often unsecured, making them prime targets for hackers. Swartz advises using a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt internet traffic. A VPN protects sensitive information such as login credentials and credit card numbers.
Disable Auto-Connect Features
Many devices automatically connect to known Wi-Fi networks or Bluetooth devices. Swartz suggests turning off these features to prevent unauthorized access. She also recommends disabling location services and Bluetooth when not in use.
Physical Security Measures
Beyond digital threats, physical theft is a concern. Swartz advises keeping devices in a secure bag or using a cable lock for laptops. She also suggests avoiding leaving devices unattended in public places.
What to Do If Your Device Is Stolen
In case of theft, having tracking software installed can help locate the device. Swartz recommends using features like Find My iPhone or Android Device Manager. She also stresses the importance of reporting the theft to local authorities and your mobile carrier immediately.
