Landis+Gyr, a global leader in energy technology, announced that the New York Public Service Commission (NYPSC) has approved its Surent G480 ultrasonic gas meter for use in gas metering applications across the state. This marks the first time an ultrasonic gas meter has received approval in New York, following rigorous testing at National Grid's standards laboratory that confirmed the meter's accuracy and safety.
Advanced Capabilities for Utilities
The Surent G480 brings advanced features that traditional gas meters cannot offer, including real-time pressure monitoring, remote shutoff capabilities, and interval data on volume, pressure, and temperature. According to Amith Kota, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Landis+Gyr, this technology enables utilities to respond to potential safety issues more quickly and with minimal disruption to customers. He emphasized that ultrasonic metering provides operators with tools to serve customers better, whether by accelerating safety responses or ensuring accurate billing.
Rigorous Testing and Certification
The NYPSC order approving the G480 detailed the testing procedures, which included accuracy assessments under accelerated longevity and extreme temperature conditions, as well as hydro leak detection. The order also highlighted that the meter's integrated shut-off valve exceeds the gas tightness provisions of the ASME B16.33 standard. This certification allows National Grid and other New York gas utilities to deploy the G480 in the field.
Enhancing System Operations and Safety
Landis+Gyr's Surent platform prioritizes safety and long-term accuracy, leveraging over 30 years of ultrasonic expertise. The G480 meter features an all-in-one ultrasonic design with solid-state measurement and three-channel interval recording for volume, pressure, and temperature. It supports integrated communications over Landis+Gyr's Gridstream Connect IoT network, including cellular, Wi-SUN, RF Mesh, and Mesh IP protocols. The integrated shut-off valve enables fast remote response to unsafe conditions detected by sensor technology. Utilities in the Midwest and surrounding regions have already begun installing the G480, driving the transition to next-generation metering technology.
