A new video game developed in Toronto is paying homage to the city's most famous capybara, which captured hearts during its escape from High Park Zoo in 2023. Titled Capy Castaway, the game features a capybara protagonist navigating a whimsical version of Toronto, complete with iconic landmarks such as the El Mocambo's neon palm tree.
Gameplay and Features
In Capy Castaway, players control a capybara who must explore various neighborhoods, solve puzzles, and avoid capture while searching for its way back home. The game incorporates real Toronto locations, including High Park, Kensington Market, and the CN Tower, all rendered in a charming, cartoonish art style. Developers have included references to the original capybara caper, such as news clippings and NPCs (non-player characters) discussing the famous escape.
Local Inspiration
The game was created by a small indie studio based in Toronto's west end. Lead designer Maya Chen said the team was inspired by the community's response to the capybara's adventure. "We wanted to capture the joy and whimsy of that moment," Chen explained. "The capybara became a symbol of resilience and fun during a tough time." The game also features a soundtrack by local musicians, blending lo-fi beats with ambient sounds of the city.
Release and Reception
Capy Castaway launched on Steam and console platforms on May 1, 2026. Early reviews have praised its humor, detailed environments, and heartfelt tribute to Toronto. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the High Park Zoo's animal care fund.
The original capybara, named Cappuccino by fans, escaped from its enclosure in May 2023 and spent several days roaming the park before being safely captured. The incident sparked widespread media coverage and a surge of public affection for the animal.
