Windsor police are investigating a suspicious fire at a commercial building in the Via Italia neighbourhood that may impact the weekend's Carrousel of the Nations Mexican Village. The blaze began Monday evening just before 10 p.m. in the 400 block of Erie Street East.
Fire Details
Windsor Fire and Rescue Service crews extinguished the fire. Smoke from the blaze entered the building housing WindsorEats Food Hall, according to a social media post by the business owners.
“So here’s what we know so far,” the post reads. “There was a fire in the business connected to the north (behind) the Windsor Eats Food Hall. As a result, smoke entered our building.”
“What does that mean for Mexican Village for Carrousel of the Nations this upcoming weekend? We’re not sure until we’re able to get all the details from the fire inspector.”
Evidence of Arson
Police said two empty gas cans were found near the property, which houses several businesses. “An accelerant was also found inside the building, indicating the fire was intentionally set,” officials said.
Authorities are now asking residents and business owners in the area to review surveillance or dashcam footage captured between 9:30 and 10:30 p.m. for evidence that may assist investigators.
