U.S. authorities have uncovered a sophisticated underground tunnel stretching hundreds of meters beneath the U.S.-Mexico border, leading to the seizure of more than 1,000 kilograms of cocaine valued at over $45 million. The tunnel, which runs from Tijuana, Mexico, to a retail store near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in California, was equipped with reinforced walls, rail and ventilation systems, electricity, and a hydraulic lift for access.
Advanced Engineering
The subterranean passageway measures approximately 590 meters in length, reaches depths of 16.8 meters, and stands up to 1.4 meters in height. Video released by the U.S. Justice Department reveals concrete steps leading into the tunnel, which features rock-hewn walls and a concrete floor. Investigators noted that the tunnel's construction indicates significant planning and resources.
Surveillance and Seizure
Homeland Security investigators spent months monitoring activity around a "Buy 4 Less" retail store on the U.S. side of the border. When they executed a raid, they discovered over 1,000 kilograms of cocaine believed to have been transported through the tunnel and loaded onto trucks. Four individuals—two from San Diego and two from Mexico—have been charged in connection with the drug smuggling operation.
Law Enforcement Response
Justin De La Torre, chief patrol agent for the Border Patrol’s San Diego sector, emphasized the determination of law enforcement: "Criminal organizations continue to look for ways to exploit our border, but they underestimate the determination of the men and women protecting it. This tunnel’s discovery is a testament to our strong partnerships and the unwavering commitment of law enforcement on both sides of the border."
Historical Context
The Justice Department reports that 99 subterranean passages have been discovered in the Southern District of California since 1993, with 28 classified as sophisticated. The last operational tunnel found in the area was in 2022. This latest discovery underscores the ongoing challenges in border security and the ingenuity of drug trafficking organizations.
