Canucks Hire Richard Seeley as Assistant GM: A Bet on Progressive Thinking
Canucks Hire Richard Seeley as Assistant GM

The Vancouver Canucks have added Richard Seeley as an assistant general manager, a move that reflects a willingness to bet on unconventional talent. Seeley, who will also serve as general manager for the Abbotsford Canucks, brings eight years of experience running the Los Angeles Kings' AHL affiliate.

A Near-Miss with the Florida Panthers

In 2016, Seeley was a candidate for the Florida Panthers' AHL head coaching position. At the time, the Panthers' front office was undergoing a revolution, with assistant general managers Steve Werier and Eric Joyce—nicknamed "the Computer Boys"—leading the charge. They valued data-driven decision-making over traditional hockey instincts.

Werier recalled that Seeley, despite a thin coaching resume, impressed them with his intelligence and progressive mindset. "He was the most interesting and clearly not faking it," Werier said. However, the Panthers ultimately hired Geordie Kinnear, an experienced AHL assistant coach.

Werier still believes Seeley was the right choice. "If you don't get them when it's too early, you won't get them when it's too late," he said.

Seeley's Background

Seeley, 48, is a Powell River native who played as a hard-nosed defenceman in the WHL for the Prince Albert Raiders, captaining the team. He went on to seven seasons in the AHL and several years in Europe before transitioning to coaching.

His hire aligns with Canucks GM Ryan Johnson's strategy of finding staff off the beaten path, including Daren Hermiston, a former agent hired for player development. The question remains whether Johnson and the Sedin twins will be given the resources to build a successful team.

As Werier noted, taking a swing on outsiders like Seeley is smart, regardless of budget. The Canucks hope this bet pays off.
