Blue Origin's New Glenn Rocket Explodes on Launchpad

Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket exploded in a massive fireball while undergoing a test on a Florida launchpad Thursday evening, dealing a major setback to the Jeff Bezos-backed firm in its efforts to challenge a dominant SpaceX.

Rocket Explodes During Hotfire Test

The company was preparing the vehicle for its fourth launch, which was slated to deploy a batch of satellites for Amazon.com Inc.'s Leo, a rival satellite network to SpaceX's Starlink. None of the satellites were on the rocket when it exploded, a spokesperson for Amazon said.

The rocket experienced an "anomaly" during the test and all personnel have been accounted for and are safe, the company said on X. Blue Origin issued a statement: "We experienced an anomaly during today's hotfire test. All personnel have been accounted for. We will provide updates as we learn more."

Bezos Responds

Jeff Bezos wrote in a post on X: "All personnel are accounted for and safe. It's too early to know the root cause but we're already working to find it. Very rough day, but we'll rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying. It's worth it."

The explosion marks a significant setback for Blue Origin, which has faced years of delays and longer-than-expected waiting periods between flights. New Glenn is years behind schedule, and this incident further complicates its timeline.

Impact on Space Industry

The failure comes as Blue Origin seeks to compete with SpaceX in the commercial space launch market. The New Glenn rocket is designed to be a heavy-lift vehicle capable of carrying large payloads to orbit. The explosion will likely delay upcoming missions and raise questions about the rocket's reliability.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion, and Blue Origin has pledged to provide updates as more information becomes available. The company remains committed to its space ambitions despite this setback.
