AI Birthday Photo Backfires for Trump-Endorsed Candidate

Former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), who has been endorsed by President Donald Trump in his bid for a U.S. Senate seat, found himself at the center of social media ridicule on Tuesday after a birthday message went awry. Political operative Abby Ronson posted a message saying, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Michigan’s next Senator,” but it was the accompanying image that drew widespread attention. The photo, flagged on X with a “Made with AI” tag, appeared to be heavily altered, prompting users to compare it with an unedited picture of Rogers from the campaign trail.

Social Media Mockery

At least three Democratic lawmakers joined in the criticism by posting their own obviously altered images. State Sen. Mallory McMorrow (D), who is running for the Democratic nomination, also responded with a pointed comment about gender-affirming care. Rogers did not directly address Ronson's post but appeared to embrace the controversy by sharing a different AI-enhanced version of himself entering a pro wrestling match.

Critics on social media were quick to voice their disapproval. Many described the situation as embarrassing and cringe-worthy, with some noting the irony of an anti-trans figure using AI to alter his appearance. The Lincoln Project advised Rogers to “go more natural next time,” while others called the move “pathetic” and “weird.”

Political Implications

The incident highlights the growing use of AI in political campaigns and the potential for backlash when such tools are used inappropriately. Rogers, a former congressman, is seeking to reclaim a Senate seat for Republicans in Michigan, a key battleground state. The mockery from both sides of the aisle underscores the risks candidates face when relying on digital enhancements that can be easily detected and ridiculed.
