23andMe Partners with HealthEx to Merge DNA and Medical Records for Personalized Health
23andMe and HealthEx Join Forces for Personalized Health

23andMe Research Institute, a nonprofit medical research organization, has announced a partnership with HealthEx, a leading platform for consumer medical record access. This collaboration allows 23andMe members to securely link their medical records with their genetic profiles, offering a comprehensive view of their personal health through the 23andMe Health Summary, currently in beta testing.

AI-Powered Health Summary

23andMe's Health Summary uses artificial intelligence to combine an individual's genetic data, medical records, blood labs, and lifestyle information. The system provides real-time, evidence-based recommendations tailored to each user. HealthEx enables secure sharing of medical records with 23andMe, ensuring transparency and user consent.

Bridging Genetics and Clinical Data

Robin Smith, Head of Product at 23andMe Research Institute, stated: "We are moving toward a world of dynamic disease risk predictions based on an individual's most current health data. The goal is to provide better, more personalized insights by bridging the gap between an individual's DNA and their medical records." Over 30,000 members have joined the Beta Testing Program to help develop innovative ways for DNA to inform health.

Extensive Research Database

23andMe has more than 11 million consented participants in its research program, with over 4 billion phenotypic data points collected. Studies involving imaging and health records are ongoing. Joyce Tung, Vice President of Research, noted: "The ability to integrate medical records at scale into our research programs holds significant promise to drive new discoveries that can advance our understanding of genetics and human biology."

Leveraging TEFCA for Secure Data Exchange

By integrating with HealthEx, 23andMe becomes one of the first consumer genetics organizations to use the national Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA). This enables automated, secure sharing of real-world medical data, such as blood labs and medical history, eliminating manual uploads and fragmented portals.

Seamless and Secure Integration

Priyanka Agarwal, co-founder and CEO of HealthEx, explained: "Genetics reveals your predispositions. Clinical data shows where you stand today. 23andMe's AI Health Summary is the first time those two layers have come together in a way that's seamless, consented, and built for individuals looking to take the next step of their health journey with confidence." The integration uses a web-based consent flow, requiring no additional app downloads, and prioritizes data privacy and ownership.
