Moose Jaw Warriors Force Decisive Game 5 Against Regina Pat Canadians
The Moose Jaw Winmar Warriors have staged a remarkable comeback in the Saskatchewan Male Under-18 AAA Hockey League championship series, battling back from a 2-0 deficit to force a decisive Game 5 against the Regina Pat Canadians. This sets up a thrilling winner-take-all showdown that will determine the league champion.
Series Momentum Shifts Dramatically
After the Regina Pat Canadians took a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five league final, the Moose Jaw Warriors refused to surrender. The Warriors kept their championship hopes alive with a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory on Wednesday night, then followed that up with a convincing 5-1 triumph on Friday night at Moose Jaw's Temple Garden Centre in Game 4.
The first three games of this intense series all required overtime to decide the outcome, highlighting the closely matched nature of these two elite teams. However, Game 4 saw the Warriors take control early and never look back.
Game 4 Dominance by Moose Jaw
Moose Jaw established their dominance in the opening period of Game 4, scoring three unanswered goals. Tyler Hudec, Ryder Gilroy, and Ryan Gibbs all found the back of the net to give the Warriors a commanding early lead they would never relinquish.
Regina managed to get on the scoreboard in the second period with a goal from Nathan Gardiner, making it 3-1. However, the Warriors responded with two more goals from Carson Deichert and Hudson Sayers, extending their lead to 5-1 through forty minutes of play. The third period remained scoreless as Moose Jaw protected their substantial advantage.
Between the pipes, Steven Wawryk continued his stellar postseason performance for Moose Jaw, recording 26 saves in Game 4 for his second consecutive victory. This followed his outstanding 45-save performance in Game 3. For Regina, Ben Meyer made 21 saves in the losing effort.
Championship Showdown Set for Saturday
The two teams will now meet in a winner-take-all Game 5 on Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. inside Regina's Co-operators Arena. This decisive contest will determine which team claims the Saskatchewan Male Under-18 AAA Hockey League championship.
Regardless of Saturday's outcome, both teams have already secured their spots in next week's Telus Cup Western Regional tournament in Regina. The Regina Pat Canadians, who won the national championship last year, will serve as the host team for this prestigious event. Meanwhile, the Moose Jaw Warriors, who lost to Regina in last year's league final, will represent the SMAAAHL as league finalists.
National Championship Aspirations Remain
The Telus Cup Western Regional tournament will feature four elite teams competing for a spot in the national championship. Alongside Regina and Moose Jaw, the tournament will include the Thunder Bay Kings and Winnipeg Bruins. The winner of this four-team event will advance to the Telus Cup national championship in Peterborough, Ontario, scheduled for April 20-26.
This means that while Saturday's Game 5 will determine the league champion, both the Regina Pat Canadians and Moose Jaw Warriors still have national title aspirations intact as they prepare for the upcoming regional tournament.
