Redblacks may turn to Jelani Stafford for short-yardage boost

The Ottawa Redblacks are facing a critical short-yardage problem as they prepare to face the Edmonton Elks on Thursday night. Through four games, the team has converted only six of 12 third-down attempts, and on five of those failures, they needed a yard or less to move the chains. This inefficiency has prompted speculation about a creative solution: deploying rookie defensive tackle Jelani Stafford as a short-yardage weapon, reminiscent of Chicago Bears legend William 'The Refrigerator' Perry.

Jelani Stafford: A Potential Secret Weapon

Listed at 5-foot-11 and 292 pounds, Stafford has started the last two games at defensive tackle for the Redblacks. The 25-year-old from Brownsville, Pennsylvania, has yet to record a defensive stat this season, but his offensive background is intriguing. During his college career at Connecticut, Stafford amassed 107 tackles over three seasons, including 53 solo stops. However, it was his sophomore season that caught attention: he rushed 15 times for 22 yards and six touchdowns, adding one catch for 10 yards.

In high school at Coal Center, Pennsylvania, Stafford was a dominant running back, rushing for over 1,000 yards as a senior after a junior campaign of 1,608 yards and 28 touchdowns. This dual-threat capability has led to comparisons with Perry, who famously lined up as a fullback for the Bears, scoring two rushing touchdowns—including one in Super Bowl XX—and even throwing a touchdown pass during his 10-year NFL career.

Short-Yardage Struggles and the 'Fridge' Comparison

The Redblacks' short-yardage woes have been a recurring theme. In their most recent loss, they failed to convert a critical third-and-short, contributing to their 0-4 start. The team's inability to gain a single yard in these situations has frustrated coaches and fans alike. While the 'Fridge' comparison is lighthearted, the logic is sound: using a powerful, low-center-of-gravity player like Stafford could provide the brute force needed to push through defensive lines.

Stafford's college stats show he can find the end zone, and his size makes him a difficult target to stop in short-yardage scenarios. The Redblacks have not officially announced any plans to use him offensively, but the possibility remains open as they search for answers.

Other Roster Moves and Injury Updates

In addition to the short-yardage dilemma, the Redblacks will be without Canadian wide receiver Keelan White for a second straight game due to an ankle injury. White had been a key target, recording 10 catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns in the first three games, both scores coming in his last outing. His absence is significant, as he had developed a strong red-zone connection with quarterback Jake Maier during the preseason.

Filling White's spot will be Binjimen Victor, a former Edmonton Elk who caught two passes for 32 yards in his Redblacks debut against the Montreal Alouettes. Victor's experience with the Elks could prove valuable as Ottawa seeks its first win of the season.

Quarterback Jake Maier's Perspective

Despite the 0-4 record, quarterback Jake Maier remains optimistic. 'The nice thing is that a lot of our shortcomings are really in our control,' Maier said. 'I feel like the last two weeks, man, to be completely blunt and honest with you, we played two teams that were featured in the Grey Cup last year, and two teams that I think a lot of people would consider Grey Cup caliber teams (this season), and we took them down to the wire. That's not me talking about moral victory at all, but what it is saying is that we're definitely good enough to play with anybody in this league. And then the separator now will be, how can we not beat ourselves? Because those teams are good enough to beat you as it is. We just have to make sure we're not beating ourselves.'

The Redblacks will need to execute better in all phases, especially on third down, to turn their fortunes around. Whether that involves giving Stafford the ball remains to be seen, but the team is exploring every option to end their losing streak.
