The B.C. Lions' upcoming home game against the Calgary Stampeders brings linebacker Jay Christensen's career full circle as the team plays in Kelowna, British Columbia, the city where his football journey began. The game, scheduled for the weekend, is part of a two-game stint in Kelowna while BC Place in Vancouver is used for the FIFA World Cup.
Kelowna Hosts CFL Action
The Lions will play their next two home games at Kelowna's Apple Bowl stadium, a venue with a capacity of approximately 10,000 seats. The Okanagan city, with a population of 165,907, is stepping in as a temporary home for the team. The move was necessitated by the FIFA World Cup, which has taken over BC Place for several weeks. This marks the first time the Lions have played regular-season games outside of Vancouver since 2019, when they hosted a game in Kamloops.
Christensen's Kelowna Roots
Jay Christensen, a 26-year-old linebacker, grew up in Kelowna and played junior football with the Okanagan Sun of the Canadian Junior Football League. He later suited up for the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds before being signed by the Lions as a free agent in 2024. 'It's surreal to come back here and play in front of my family and friends,' Christensen said. 'This is where I fell in love with the game, so it's a special moment.'
Game Details and Impact
The Lions enter the game with a 3-2 record, while the Stampeders are 2-3. The matchup is critical for both teams as they jockey for playoff positioning in the CFL's West Division. Kelowna's Apple Bowl has been upgraded with temporary seating and lighting to meet CFL standards. The Lions' front office expects a sellout crowd, with tickets selling quickly since the announcement. 'We've seen tremendous support from the Okanagan community,' said Lions president Rick LeLacheur. 'This is a chance to grow our fan base beyond Vancouver.'
For Christensen, the game is a homecoming. 'I remember coming to Lions games as a kid and dreaming of playing in the CFL,' he said. 'Now I get to do it in my hometown.' The team hopes the Kelowna games will build momentum for the Lions as they aim for a playoff berth.
