The Calgary Flames have locked in young defenceman Simon Nemec with a five-year contract worth US$36.25 million, the team announced Monday. The deal carries an average annual value of $7.25 million.
Deal Reached Quickly After Trade
Nemec, a restricted free agent, was acquired from the New Jersey Devils less than two weeks ago. Flames general manager Craig Conroy identified signing Nemec as a top priority for the summer. The Slovak defenceman expressed enthusiasm about joining the Flames and a desire to commit long-term, facilitating a smooth negotiation process.
Rising Star Blueliner
Selected second overall in the 2022 NHL Draft, Nemec is just 22 years old. In the 2025-26 season, he recorded 11 goals and 15 assists over 68 games. The Flames project him to anchor the top defensive pairing for years to come.
According to Conroy, the organization views Nemec as a cornerstone piece. “Simon is a talented, young defenceman with immense potential. We are thrilled to have him under contract and look forward to his contributions on the ice,” the GM said in a statement.
Impact on Flames’ Blue Line
Nemec’s signing solidifies Calgary’s defence core, adding a skilled, puck-moving presence expected to log significant minutes. The contract reflects the team’s confidence in his development and commitment to building around young talent.
