FIFA’s appeals committee has denied the Royal Belgian Football Association’s (RBFA) request to reconsider US striker Folarin Balogun’s eligibility for Monday night’s match. The committee declared the RBFA’s appeal 'inadmissible,' stating that the Belgian association is not an active party to the ongoing proceedings between FIFA and US Soccer.
Background of the Dispute
Balogun, who plays for the United States national team, received a red card in a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina last week, leading to a suspension. However, FIFA allowed him to play in the upcoming match against Belgium, prompting the RBFA to challenge the decision. The RBFA argued that the ruling violated FIFA’s rules and regulations.
In a statement, the RBFA expressed frustration, noting that it has not received the grounds for FIFA’s decision, nor a copy of the decision or the referee’s report, despite repeated requests since the start of the procedure.
Impact on the Match
As a result of the appeal denial, Balogun remains available to face Belgium in Seattle on Monday. The US striker is expected to feature in the crucial World Cup 2026 round of 16 clash.
The decision has sparked controversy, with the RBFA claiming it undermines the integrity of the competition. FIFA has not commented further on the matter.
