CFL West Division Parity: Are All Five Teams Grey Cup Contenders?
CFL West Division Parity: Are All Five Teams Grey Cup Contenders?

The CFL is experiencing a remarkable era of parity, especially in the West division, where all five teams appear to be legitimate Grey Cup contenders. Much of this can be attributed to the exceptional quarterback play across the division.

High-Scoring Football at Its Best

Week 2 of the CFL season showcased the offensive firepower, with four quarterbacks throwing for over 400 yards. This feat hadn't been accomplished since Week 6 of the 1995 season, according to CFL records. The league is seeing some of the most exciting football in years, with games often decided in the final minutes.

Despite this, the CFL is planning to introduce rule changes in 2027 that would shorten the field and end zones, potentially reducing the space for quarterbacks to operate. Many fans and analysts question the timing of these changes when the product on the field is so compelling.

Five Teams, Five Quarterbacks

Each West division team is led by a veteran quarterback: Trevor Harris (Saskatchewan Roughriders), Zach Collaros (Winnipeg Blue Bombers), Vernon Adams (Calgary Stampeders), Nathan Rourke (B.C. Lions), and Cody Fajardo (Edmonton Elks). This depth of talent is a key reason for the parity.

Harris, who threw for 417 yards and three touchdowns in Saskatchewan's 31-27 win over B.C. in Week 2, earned player-of-the-week honors. The 40-year-old quarterback noted that the continuity across the league has led to higher quality football.

“I can’t remember a year where every team has very, very good quarterback play,” Harris said. “There’s a lot of continuity around the league in terms of keeping teams together, and I think that makes for a great brand of football.”

Record-Breaking Performances

Through the first two weeks of the season, the league's quarterback completion percentage stands at 70.4%, on pace for a record. The passer rating is also at an all-time high of 110.5, according to CFL statistics. These numbers suggest that the offensive explosion is not a fluke but a trend.

Roughriders cornerback Tevaughn Campbell emphasized the challenge of facing any West team. “Every week is a challenge,” he said. “Every team has their threats and has their opportunity to win the game.”

Looking Ahead

As the season progresses, the West division is expected to remain highly competitive. While only three or four teams may make the playoffs this year, the potential for all five to qualify in the future is a testament to the league's current depth.

Harris summed up the sentiment: “It’s going to be a tremendous year this year for the CFL in terms of competition and parity, and I anticipate the football to continue to get better and better.”
