The Vancouver Canucks have signed veteran defenceman Jamie Oleksiak as a free agent, filling the role of big, left-shot blueliner after trading Marcus Pettersson to the New York Rangers. Oleksiak, 33, inked a two-year deal with a US$5 million cap hit, replacing Pettersson who was dealt for a 2030 first-round pick.
Contract details and trade context
Canucks general manager Ryan Johnson traded Pettersson, 30, who had a US$5.5 million cap hit through 2030-31, to the Rangers for a first-round selection in 2030. Pettersson, listed at 6-foot-5 and 174 pounds, had been with Vancouver since February 2025 after coming over from the Pittsburgh Penguins in a trade that included the 12th overall pick in the 2025 draft. Oleksiak, 6-foot-7 and 252 pounds, signed for two years at a lower cap hit, saving the Canucks cap space while adding an asset for the future.
Oleksiak's role in the rebuild
Johnson emphasized that the 2030 pick is trade capital for when Vancouver is ready for playoff runs. Oleksiak, who has 57 NHL playoff games, including a strong performance with the Dallas Stars in the 2020 Stanley Cup Final where he averaged 21:38 minutes per game, is expected to mentor young defencemen like Elias Pettersson, Tom Willander, and Zeev Buium. He said during a Zoom call: "I've been around the league for a while, and I can bring my experiences to the team. Just show up every day with a good work ethic and try and help set the standard."
On-ice impact and statistics
Last season, Oleksiak averaged 16:56 minutes per game with the Seattle Kraken, fifth among defencemen, while Pettersson averaged 21:27 with the Canucks. Oleksiak is expected to take on more penalty-kill duties; he averaged 1:39 short-handed minutes in Seattle compared to Pettersson's 2:43 in Vancouver. He is also more physical, averaging 5.08 hits per 60 minutes versus Pettersson's 2.69. The Canucks also signed veteran defenceman Luke Schenn, 36, to a one-year, US$2.25 million deal to provide additional veteran presence.
Pairing with young talent
Vancouver's defence core includes top blueliner Filip Hronek, 28, and three young prospects: Elias Pettersson (22, left-shot), Tom Willander (21, right-shot), and Zeev Buium (20, left-shot). Oleksiak is the only veteran lefty, likely pairing with Willander, the Canucks' 11th overall pick in 2023. Oleksiak noted: "You look at the guys we brought in... and I think the three of us bring sandpaper and experience, and I think some steadiness as well."
Pettersson's departure and legacy
Despite reports that Pettersson was motivated to move, his agent Peter Wallen told CHEK's Donnie and Dhali that Pettersson loved Vancouver and was thrilled to see the new management. Pettersson was a good influence in the room and had 12 fighting majors in his career, including bouts with Tom Wilson and Sam Bennett. The Penguins flipped the 12th overall pick from the Pettersson trade to the Flyers for picks No. 22 and 31; Philadelphia used No. 12 on centre Jack Nesbitt, who had 25 goals and 58 points in 55 OHL games last season.
