Canada’s men’s national team seemed unable to catch a break in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday, as a shocking near-goal at a virtually empty net miraculously stayed out. In the 54th minute, with Canada trailing 1-0 in the second half, captain Stephen Eustáquio fed the ball to Richie Laryea, who faced a wide-open net. Laryea fired a shot, but a wild sequence unfolded. Despite the open goal, the ball deflected off the foot of Bosnia’s Sead Kolašinac and then off the crossbar back into play. FOX Sports commentators Darren Fletcher and Owen Hargreaves could not believe their eyes. The near-miss did not spell immediate doom, as a late-game goal tied the score, resulting in a draw.
