Canadian soccer supporters are struggling to secure tickets for the World Cup Round of 32 match between Canada and South Africa this Sunday in Los Angeles, with official FIFA tickets priced at US$4,300 and limited availability.
Ticket Scarcity on Official Channels
As of Thursday afternoon, the only seats available on the official FIFA ticket website were priced at US$4,300, with fewer than 10 tickets remaining for the 70,000-seat Los Angeles Stadium. The FIFA resale marketplace, where ticket-holders can sell seats to other fans, showed zero tickets available for the match.
This is the first time Canada has advanced to the knockout round of the World Cup, making the game a historic event for Canadian soccer.
Alternative Ticket Options
Various online resellers offer seats ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, but these vendors lack the certainty of purchasing directly from FIFA. Some superfans on a Facebook group for Team Canada supporters reported buying tickets through the Canada Red organization for around CDN$850, significantly less than resale sites.
Canada Red memberships range from $50 to $5,000 and support soccer development in the country. However, the website warned Thursday that "ticket allocation has now been closed" and that codes required to purchase tickets are no longer distributed to new members.
Travel Costs Add to Burden
Fans considering a trip to Los Angeles face steep travel expenses. A Vancouver travel agent warned that surge-pricing could drive up airfares due to sudden demand after Canada's advancement was confirmed Wednesday.
Expedia searches showed economy flights from Vancouver to Las Vegas (a nearby alternative) from June 27 to 29 at $2,932 for a non-stop flight and $1,270 for a route with stopovers. Train tickets were quoted at $600, and flights at $1,900.
Fan Reactions
On social media, reactions ranged from frustration to patriotic determination. One fan on X commented, "You'd have to have more money than brains to pay that if you're a Canadian supporter." On Reddit, user AngusGGMU posted, "Will be a tiny bit conflicted (born in South Africa) but will be rooting for the boys as a proud Canadian!!!"
Others joked about walking to Los Angeles due to prohibitive travel costs.
Watch Parties in Vancouver
Many fans may opt for free watch parties in Metro Vancouver, including locations on Granville Street, the PNE, Granville Island, and North Vancouver's Shipyards. These events offer a communal experience without the high costs of tickets and travel.
