The Toronto Blue Jays have introduced a new celebration mascot: the 'home run dragon,' a red dragon toy on a wooden stick that has coincided with a dramatic offensive outburst. Since debuting on Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants, the Blue Jays have scored 19 runs in two games, a stark contrast to the three runs they managed in the previous four contests.
Origins of the Home Run Dragon
The dragon was the brainchild of hitting coach David Popkins, who wanted a symbol of 'fearlessness,' according to Sportsnet. Popkins found the toy at a store before Tuesday's game, purchasing two: one for the batting cages and one for game use. Left fielder Jonatan Clase first wielded the dragon after hitting a three-run homer in the second inning, giving Toronto a 3-0 lead. The celebration also included the traditional home run jacket, typically worn on Canada Day.
On Wednesday, Kazuma Okamoto celebrated a grand slam with the dragon, and George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also used it after their home runs. The team's social media posts show players joyfully displaying the toy, which has become an instant hit with fans.
Fan Demand and Stadium Restrictions
The dragon's popularity has led fans to search for their own copies, with one Reddit user finding it for sale online. However, a potential issue has emerged: Rogers Centre's 'know before you go' guide lists sticks as prohibited items. The policy states, 'For the safety and comfort of all fans, Rogers Centre may prohibit any of the items listed below or any other item(s) deemed to be a security risk,' specifically mentioning 'Sticks (including signs attached to a stick), golf ball retrievers, brooms.'
This means fans eager to bring their own home run dragon to the ballpark may be disappointed. The Blue Jays have not commented on whether they plan to sell a version of the toy that complies with stadium rules. The team is currently on the road, with three games against the San Diego Padres before the All-Star break. They return home on July 17 to face the Chicago White Sox, starting a seven-game homestand that also includes the Tampa Bay Rays.
Impact on Team Performance
The dragon's debut has coincided with a significant offensive turnaround. After scoring only three runs in four games, the Blue Jays exploded for 19 runs in two contests, including a 5-0 lead from Okamoto's grand slam. While correlation does not imply causation, the team's newfound energy is undeniable. Fans are hopeful the dragon's luck continues, but for now, bringing the toy to the Rogers Centre remains uncertain.
