Flames Stay Optimistic After Dropping to Sixth in NHL Draft Lottery
Flames Optimistic After Falling to Sixth in Draft Lottery

The Calgary Flames experienced a stroke of bad luck in the NHL Draft Lottery, falling from the fourth-best odds to the sixth overall pick. Despite the disappointment, General Manager Craig Conroy remains optimistic about the team's future.

Conroy's Positive Outlook

“You always want to win anything we do, but now we just know six is the spot and we’ll really dig in,” Conroy said. “I’m really happy, at least we’re at six, that’s the best part.” The Flames GM emphasized that the team will select the best player available, regardless of position, when they pick on June 26.

Historical Success at Sixth Overall

The Flames have a solid track record with the sixth pick. They selected Sean Monahan in 2013 and Matthew Tkachuk in 2016, both of whom became key contributors. Historically, players like Peter Forsberg, Vincent Damphousse, and Paul Coffey were also chosen at this spot, suggesting the Flames could still land a franchise cornerstone.

Lottery Results and Implications

The Toronto Maple Leafs, with the fifth-best odds, won the first overall pick, while the San Jose Sharks moved up from ninth to second. The Flames, who had a 9.5% chance of securing the top pick, instead dropped two spots. Conroy acknowledged the disappointment but stressed the importance of focusing on the positives.

“We’re going to go with the best player at six, whether it’s a forward, defence, goalie, we’re going to pick the best one,” Conroy said. “I think in my mind, I kind of see how this draft is probably going to go. I know what’s coming. Last year, we were looking for centres and they happened to be there. This one is a little different.”

Potential Targets at No. 6

Top prospects like Gavin McKenna and Ivar Stenberg are expected to be off the board, but the Flames could still land talented players such as Keaton Verehoeff, Caleb Malhotra, Carson Carels, or Chase Reid. Any of these prospects would immediately become one of the most important assets in the organization’s system.

While fans may be disappointed that the team fell instead of moving up, Conroy remains confident in the scouting staff’s ability to identify the best available talent. The Flames will now focus on preparation for the draft, aiming to add a key piece to their rebuilding core.
