Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez was eliminated in the first round of the French Open on Monday, falling 6-4, 6-4 to American Alycia Parks. The match, held at Roland Garros in Paris, saw Fernandez struggle to find her rhythm against Parks' powerful serve and aggressive baseline play.
Match Highlights
Fernandez, ranked 24th in the world, managed to break Parks' serve once in each set but could not sustain momentum. Parks, ranked 56th, capitalized on Fernandez's unforced errors, particularly on the backhand side. The American fired seven aces and won 78% of her first-serve points.
Fernandez's Struggles
The 23-year-old from Laval, Quebec, entered the tournament with high hopes after a strong clay-court season, including a semifinal appearance in Madrid. However, she committed 32 unforced errors compared to Parks' 18. Fernandez saved three of five break points but was unable to convert her own opportunities, going 2-for-7 on break points.
Parks' Performance
Parks, 24, showcased her powerful game, hitting 25 winners to Fernandez's 14. The American, who won her first WTA title in 2023, will face either Czech Marketa Vondrousova or Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu in the second round.
Canadian Results
Fernandez's loss leaves Canada with only two players in the women's singles draw: Bianca Andreescu, who advanced to the second round, and Rebecca Marino, who plays her first-round match Tuesday. On the men's side, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov are set to compete later this week.
The French Open continues through June 7, with defending champion Iga Swiatek looking to retain her title.
