Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli stormed to pole position for the Miami Grand Prix on Saturday, delivering a stunning qualifying performance that marked a strong rebound for the team after a disappointing sprint race earlier in the weekend.
Antonelli's Stellar Performance
The Italian driver clocked a blistering lap time to secure the top spot on the grid, edging out Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who will start second. The result was a significant boost for Mercedes, which had struggled in the sprint race, finishing outside the podium positions.
Antonelli, who has been steadily improving throughout the season, expressed his delight after the session. "It's an incredible feeling to take pole here in Miami. The team worked hard to turn things around after the sprint, and we did it," he said.
Verstappen's Challenge
Verstappen, the reigning world champion, acknowledged Antonelli's pace but remained confident for the race. "Kimi did a great lap, but we are close. Tomorrow is what matters," the Dutchman commented.
The qualifying session saw several surprises, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc qualifying third and McLaren's Lando Norris fourth. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton, driving for Mercedes, could only manage sixth place after struggling with balance issues.
Mercedes' Comeback
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised the team's resilience. "After a tough sprint, we regrouped and found the right setup. Kimi's pole is a testament to everyone's hard work," Wolff said.
The Miami Grand Prix is set to take place on Sunday, with Antonelli looking to convert his pole position into his first victory of the season.
