Vancouver Whitecaps Bolster Attack with Signing of Senegalese Forward

The Vancouver Whitecaps have made a significant addition to their attacking options, announcing the acquisition of Senegalese forward Cheikh Sabaly from French Ligue 1 side FC Metz. The Major League Soccer club confirmed the move on Thursday, securing the 26-year-old player on a contract that extends through the 2028-29 season, with a club option for an additional year.

Contract Details and Player Background

Sabaly will officially join the Whitecaps roster once the club completes the necessary administrative processes, including obtaining his international transfer certificate, visa, work permit, and medical clearance. The forward has spent the last eight years developing his skills with FC Metz, where he made 122 appearances across various competitions including Ligue 1, Ligue 2, and the Coupe de France.

During his tenure with the French club, Sabaly demonstrated consistent offensive production, scoring 21 goals and providing 11 assists. His most impressive campaign came during the 2024-25 season when he netted 15 goals and added 4 assists, finishing as FC Metz's leading goal scorer and helping the team earn promotion to Ligue 1.

International Experience and Playing Style

Beyond his club success, Sabaly brings valuable international experience to Vancouver. The 5-foot-6, 130-pound forward has earned 12 caps for Senegal's national team, contributing one goal and four assists. He was part of the Senegalese squad that triumphed in last year's Africa Cup of Nations, adding championship pedigree to his resume.

Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster praised the new signing, stating: "Cheikh is an athletic, dynamic attacking player who last season helped his team with 19 goals contributions to promote to Ligue 1. He has developed in highly competitive environments with Metz and the Senegal national team, and we believe the quality and experience he brings will make an immediate impact on our group."

Whitecaps' Upcoming Schedule and Integration

The Whitecaps are currently conducting their preseason training camp in Marbella, Spain, as they prepare for a busy schedule of competitive matches. The team is set to play their first game of the year on February 18 when they visit Costa Rican side C.S. Cartagines in CONCACAF Champions Cup action.

Vancouver will then open their MLS regular season campaign at home against Real Salt Lake on February 21, giving Sabaly an early opportunity to make his mark with his new club. The addition of the Senegalese forward represents a strategic move by the Whitecaps to strengthen their attacking options as they aim for success in both domestic and international competitions.
