William Villeneuve Set for NHL Debut with Maple Leafs Amid Injury Updates
Villeneuve NHL Debut with Maple Leafs, Stolarz Injury Serious

Toronto Marlies defenceman William Villeneuve is poised to achieve a lifelong dream as he prepares for his National Hockey League debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 24-year-old will take the ice on Saturday night, marking a significant milestone six years after being selected by Toronto in the fourth round of the 2020 draft.

A Surreal Journey to the NHL

Villeneuve expressed a mix of excitement and disbelief ahead of his first NHL game. "There’s a lot of times through my four years where you feel so far away from the NHL," he said. "This year has been an up and down year physically, especially dealing with mono in December, but I feel better and my game is in good shape. It feels surreal a little bit to be here."

He emphasized the personal growth he has experienced since turning professional. "Everyone has his own path, his own timeline. If I look at myself four years ago, it’s a different player, different person. I’m confident in my game, and I’ve worked a long time for that."

Preparation and Support

Villeneuve received notification from Leafs staff after Thursday's game against the New York Islanders that he would likely play against the Florida Panthers. Confirmation came on Saturday morning at Scotiabank Arena, where his parents will be in attendance to witness the momentous occasion.

"It’s a great moment for me, but a great moment for them too," Villeneuve noted. "There’s a lot of people behind someone making their NHL debut. It’s going to be fun."

In the American Hockey League this season, the right-shooting defenceman has recorded three goals and 26 assists in 59 games with the Marlies. He will wear No. 76 and be paired with Simon Benoit in the Leafs' penultimate home game of the 2025-26 season.

Teammate and Coach Insights

Benoit offered words of encouragement to Villeneuve. "I told him, just enjoy it. Those games are hard to get, and you only get the first one once. I’ll be talking to him all night, give him options, talk to him on the Panthers forechecks."

Coach Craig Berube provided strategic advice, acknowledging the initial nerves. "First couple shifts will be a little nerve-wracking, and you want to do well, but after you get through a couple shifts, you get feeling better and play. We provide him with what he’s going to see from Florida. They are a hard forechecking team. They dump a lot of pucks in. He’s going to have to be good on his retrievals and the battle down low tonight. That’ll be a big part of the game for him."

Draft Class Milestone

Villeneuve will become the second player from the Leafs' 2020 draft class to appear in an NHL game, joining goalie Artur Akhtyamov, who was also selected in the fourth round. Akhtyamov made his NHL debut against Edmonton in December 2025 and started against the Islanders on Thursday.

Injury Updates: Stolarz and Others

In other team news, goalie Anthony Stolarz suffered a lower-body injury during Wednesday's game against the Washington Capitals. Berube confirmed that Stolarz will not require surgery, but the injury is "serious enough" and will compromise his off-season training.

Stolarz injured his left leg while making a routine save. Throughout his two seasons with the Leafs, he has been susceptible to injuries, a concern as his four-year contract extension begins next season.

Additionally, defenceman Brandon Carlo and forward Dakota Joshua are sidelined for the remainder of the season with lower-body and upper-body injuries, respectively, sustained in the same game against the Capitals. Berube indicated that neither player will need surgery this summer.

Projected Lineup for the Game

The Maple Leafs' projected lineup for the upcoming game includes:

  • Forwards: Matias Maccelli-John Tavares-William Nylander, Easton Cowan-Max Domi-Matthew Knies, Steven Lorentz-Luke Haymes-Nick Robertson, Michael Pezzetta-Jacob Quillan-Calle Jarnkrok
  • Defence: Morgan Rielly-Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Jake McCabe-Troy Stecher, Simon Benoit-William Villeneuve
  • Goaltenders: Joseph Woll, Artur Akhtyamov

This game not only highlights Villeneuve's debut but also underscores the challenges the Leafs face with key injuries as they approach the end of the season.
