Small businesses along the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension route are struggling as construction disrupts access and reduces foot traffic. The multi-year project, part of a major transit expansion, has led to road closures, noise, and dust, driving away customers.
Business Owners Voice Concerns
Many shop owners report significant revenue drops. A local cafe owner said sales are down 40% since construction began. 'Customers can't park or reach us easily,' he said. Some businesses have had to reduce staff hours or close temporarily.
Calls for Compensation
The Surrey Board of Trade has urged the provincial government to provide financial relief. 'These businesses are the backbone of our community,' said the board's CEO. 'They need support to survive this disruption.'
TransLink acknowledges the challenges but emphasizes long-term benefits. 'Once complete, the SkyTrain will bring more customers and better connectivity,' a spokesperson said. Construction is expected to continue until 2029.
Some business owners remain hopeful. 'We just need to get through this,' said a bookstore owner. 'The SkyTrain will be great for the area eventually.'
