Fred VanVleet Reveals Low-Ball Offer Led to Raptors Departure
VanVleet: Low-Ball Offer Led to Raptors Exit

In a candid podcast appearance, former Toronto Raptors all-star Fred VanVleet has opened up about the circumstances that led to his exit from the team, revealing that a low-ball contract offer played a pivotal role in his decision to leave. VanVleet, who has been sidelined all season with a torn ACL, shared these insights during an episode of the Out The Mud podcast, hosted by ex-NBA players Tony Allen and Zach Randolph.

VanVleet's Free Agency Experience

VanVleet expressed that while he cherished his time in Toronto, he "didn’t really want to go back" when he became a free agent after the 2023-24 season. He described the negotiation process as awkward, stating that the Raptors initially presented an offer he deemed disrespectful. "They came with the bulls*** first," VanVleet said, emphasizing that when the Houston Rockets presented a substantial deal, his mind was immediately made up.

The Contract Details

The Rockets offered VanVleet a massive three-year, $130-million max contract, which far exceeded what the Raptors could match due to salary cap constraints. VanVleet noted that even a last-minute improved offer from Toronto couldn't sway him, as both parties seemed aware the relationship had run its course. He signed with Houston swiftly, later extending his contract for two years at $50 million in 2025 before suffering his season-ending injury.

Reflections on Raptors' Decline

VanVleet also reflected on the Raptors' trajectory post their 2019 NBA championship, pointing out that key departures like Kawhi Leonard contributed to the team's gradual decline in the standings. He felt this context added to his decision to seek a new opportunity elsewhere.

Current Status and Playoffs

Despite his injury, VanVleet has been participating in non-contact, on-court work, though Rockets head coach Ime Udoka has confirmed he will not play until engaging in full-contact training. The Rockets currently trail the Los Angeles Lakers in their first-round playoff series, with Game 2 scheduled for Tuesday night.

This revelation sheds light on the often-private negotiations in professional sports, highlighting how financial terms and team dynamics can influence player movements.
