Tristan Jarry's Whirlwind Week: From Penguins Trade to Facing Pittsburgh as an Oiler
Tristan Jarry's Emotional Return to Pittsburgh with Oilers

The hockey world moves fast, but for new Edmonton Oilers goaltender Tristan Jarry, the past few days have been a surreal blur. Traded, debuted, and now set to face his former team, Jarry is living a storyline few players experience.

A Trade and an Immediate Debut

Tristan Jarry's life was upended last Friday when he received the call from Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas informing him of a trade to the Edmonton Oilers. The move ended a nearly decade-long chapter with the only NHL organization he had ever known.

There was no time for a lengthy adjustment period. Jarry was thrust into action for his new club the very next day, Saturday, December 13, 2025. He backstopped the Oilers to a 6-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in his debut, making his record 1-0 with Edmonton. The win was celebrated with teammate Mattias Janmark, but the reality of wearing a different jersey was, in his own words, "a little weird."

The Emotional Return to Pittsburgh

The whirlwind schedule takes its most poignant turn on Tuesday night, as Jarry and the Oilers travel to Pittsburgh. For the first time in his career, he will enter the visitors' locker room at PPG Paints Arena and attempt to defeat the Penguins, a team filled with his closest friends and former teammates.

"It will be very weird," Jarry admitted to reporters at the Oilers' team hotel. "That first game (with Edmonton) felt like my first game in the NHL all over again. I'm sure playing in Pittsburgh will be much of the same." He joked that with everything happening so quickly, he might even still be wearing his old Penguins-themed goalie mask for the game.

Leaving a Home Behind

The emotional weight of the transition is significant. Jarry was drafted by Pittsburgh and envisioned spending his entire career there. "I always thought I would never play for another team," he confessed. "I loved Pittsburgh. I loved living there. I love everything that came with putting that jersey on. It was very special to me."

He compared his attachment to the Penguins to how Oilers' mainstay Stuart Skinner feels about Edmonton, highlighting the deep personal connection severed by the business of hockey. While he had heard trade rumours, the reality of the call from Dubas hit hard, forcing a sudden goodbye to the city and organization he called home.

Now, Jarry must harness those emotions and focus on the task at hand: helping his new team secure two points. For a goaltender, a position demanding intense mental focus, this week presents a unique challenge. As Act II of his emotional tour begins in Pittsburgh, Tristan Jarry's story with the Edmonton Oilers is off to a start that is anything but ordinary.
