Ottawa Charge Maintains Focus on Hockey as Coach Carla MacLeod Steps Away for Cancer Treatment
The Ottawa Charge professional women's hockey team has found powerful new motivation in their push for the final PWHL playoff position. As head coach Carla MacLeod steps away from the team to continue her breast cancer treatment, players are determined to make her proud through their performance on the ice.
Team Processes Difficult News Before Returning to Practice
Following Friday night's game at Canadian Tire Centre, players learned their head coach would be taking an indefinite leave to focus on her health. The team utilized the weekend to process this emotional news, ask questions, and mentally reset before returning to TD Place for practice on Monday with renewed determination.
"When we came out to practice on Monday, we were focused on hockey, and that's been the vibe," said Haley Irwin, who will serve as interim head coach during MacLeod's absence. "Carla is in good hands, and she reassured all of us that she'll keep us updated so that we can focus on hockey."
Irwin Steps Seamlessly into Interim Coaching Role
Irwin brings continuity to the coaching position, having served as a steady assistant coach since the team's inaugural season. Her natural leadership emerged immediately as she took charge of practice sessions, emphasizing puck possession and scoring opportunities as the Charge prepares to face the Seattle Torrent on Wednesday.
Players responded positively to Irwin's guidance during game-scenario drills, gathering attentively around her as she diagrammed plays on a whiteboard. Charge general manager Mike Hirshfeld expressed confidence in the coaching staff, describing the 37-year-old Irwin as "a future head coach in this league."
Team Channels Emotion into Playoff Push
Captain Brianne Jenner acknowledged the emotional weight of MacLeod's situation while emphasizing the team's commitment to their professional responsibilities. "It's fair to say that there's an added emotion with this because she's part of our family and we care a lot about her," Jenner said. "But the best thing we can do is in our preparation and let her know that we're behind her and we'll take care of business at the rink."
The team hopes to extend their season with playoff games that might coincide with MacLeod's eventual return. With only one playoff spot remaining in the PWHL and three teams already qualified, Ottawa finds itself just one point behind the Toronto Sceptres with five regular-season games remaining.
Hockey Community Shows Overwhelming Support
Following Monday's official announcement about MacLeod's indefinite absence, the hockey community responded with an outpouring of support. Hirshfeld noted that even Ottawa Senators head coach Travis Green reached out, creating what he described as an "overwhelming and a little bit emotional" response.
"If you know Carla well, you know she doesn't love that attention, but I think she's grateful for it," Hirshfeld commented about the widespread support for the beloved coach.
As the Ottawa Charge navigates the final stretch of their regular season, they carry both the weight of their coach's health battle and the determination to honor her through their performance. The team remains focused on securing that final playoff position, knowing that success on the ice represents the best possible tribute to their absent leader.
