Multiple sources are now reporting that Edmonton Oilers prospect Maxim Berezkin (also known as Beryozkin) will not be signing with the Edmonton Oilers. Instead, he has agreed to a two-year extension with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
Agent Confirms Extension
The Hockey News Hub, which focuses on KHL news, reported, "This has been confirmed by his agent, Stanislav Romanov. Oilers prospect Maxim Beryozkin will sign a two-year extension with Lokomotiv." Earlier rumors suggested he would sign his entry-level contract (ELC) with Edmonton after his current contract expired on June 1.
Change of Heart After Gagarin Cup Victory
Hockey writer Daria Tuboltseva, who previously reported that Berezkin would be heading to Edmonton, stated, "Per source, Edmonton Oilers prospect Maxim Berezkin has changed his mind after winning a second straight Gagarin Cup and has decided to stay in the KHL for two more years, signing an extension with Lokomotiv. I think it's a mistake. Berezkin is already 24. At some point, development has to happen against NHL competition, not in a comfort zone where you've already won everything."
Berezkin, a power forward, has been a key player for Lokomotiv, contributing to their back-to-back Gagarin Cup championships. His decision to remain in Russia raises questions about the Oilers' prospect development strategy and the challenges of luring European talent to North America.
