The Edmonton Oilers are exploring trade options for defenseman Darnell Nurse, but finding a perfect deal remains challenging. Nurse, who carries a $9.25 million annual cap hit, has drawn solid interest from several teams, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, and San Jose Sharks. However, his contract structure complicates any potential transaction.
Contract Complications
Nurse's $6 million signing bonus, payable in three installments through February 2027, is a significant hurdle. Typically, trading teams prefer to wait until after July 1 bonus payments are made. Nurse's base salary this season is $2 million, followed by $1.2 million for three additional years.
Potential Trade Partners
Craig Button, a hockey analyst, suggests a one-for-one swap with the Toronto Maple Leafs for Morgan Rielly. However, Rielly has a no-trade clause and has not waived it. Button believes Nurse's elite athleticism means his game won't decline, making him a viable target for teams like the Los Angeles Kings.
Button also proposed a trade sending Nurse to Los Angeles for forward Trevor Moore, who could provide depth and help on the penalty kill. The Oilers would then need to sign a free-agent defenseman to replace Nurse.
Goaltending Market
The Ottawa Senators are reportedly interested in former Oiler goaltender Stuart Skinner, who could partner with Linus Ullmark. Ottawa has struggled with goaltending depth, cycling through Leevi Merilainen, James Reimer, and Mads Sogaard.
Overall, while Nurse's trade value remains, the Oilers face a complex puzzle to find the right deal that benefits both sides.
