Oilers Could Secure Strong Return for Darnell Nurse If Traded
Oilers Could Get Solid Return for Darnell Nurse

The Edmonton Oilers are reportedly considering trading defenseman Darnell Nurse this summer. For such a move to happen, Nurse would need to waive his full no-movement clause, which remains in effect until next summer. After the 2026-27 season, he can be traded to all but ten teams on his no-trade list.

Trade Rumors Intensify

Speculation suggests that Nurse, 31, might seek a trade while he can control his destination. After 11 full seasons in Edmonton, he faced unprecedented criticism this past season, with even mainstream media outlets highlighting fan calls for his departure. A social media poll indicated that 80 percent of respondents wanted him traded, though many insisted the Oilers should not retain much of his $9.25 million annual salary, which runs through 2029-30. Others would only approve a trade if it brought a solid return.

Factors Favoring a Trade

Several factors could make Nurse a valuable asset for other teams:

  • Rising Salary Cap: The cap is increasing to $104 million per team, making Nurse's cap hit less burdensome. Additionally, his contract is front-loaded, with actual salaries of $8 million next season and $7.25 million in the final three years, appealing to budget-conscious teams.
  • Thin Free Agent Market: The free agent market for defensemen is weak. Top scorers like Darren Raddysh, John Carlson, and Rasmus Andersson may re-sign with their current teams, leaving few reliable top-four options.
  • Regular-Season Performance: Despite playoff struggles over the past five years, Nurse has been an effective second-pairing defenseman during the regular season. Among Edmonton's top four left-shot defensemen over that period, Nurse leads in even-strength ice time and hits per 60 minutes, and ranks third in points per 60.
  • League-Wide Ranking: Compared to 250 NHL defensemen with at least 1,000 even-strength minutes, Nurse ranks 87th in points rate, 42nd in hits, and 40th in ice time. He remains a big, tough, durable player in his prime.

Playoff Concerns

Nurse's playoff performance has been a major reason for trade calls. However, the Cult of Hockey's video review of his contributions to Grade A shots and mistakes against at even strength shows a mixed but not disastrous picture.

Given these factors, it appears increasingly likely that the Oilers could secure a valuable return for Nurse without significant salary retention.
