Auston Matthews Speaks on Maple Leafs Future After Injury

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews made his first public comments on Thursday since a knee injury ended his season prematurely. Speaking at the Ford Performance Centre, Matthews addressed his future with the team amidst a period of uncertainty for the franchise.

Reflecting on a Disappointing Season

Matthews expressed frustration with the team's performance during the 2025-26 NHL season, which saw the Maple Leafs fall short of expectations. "This was a tough year, it was a frustrating year," Matthews stated. "We didn't meet the goals or the expectations that we set out at the start." He emphasized player accountability, noting that the responsibility ultimately falls on the team's roster to perform consistently.

The 28-year-old center acknowledged the fans' disappointment while reaffirming his commitment to the organization. "We love our fans and we appreciate our fans. We understand their frustration," Matthews said. "I love being the captain of this team. I think it's an incredible honour to wake up every day and wear this jersey."

Uncertainty About Team Direction

When asked about potential organizational changes, including speculation about a "re-tool" or "rebuild," Matthews remained noncommittal. "I can't predict the future," he remarked. "There's steps that kind of have to take place, they're going to hire new leadership and management and stuff like that. I don't really know."

Matthews' contract is set to expire in two years, adding another layer of complexity to the team's planning. He indicated that discussions about his long-term future would need to wait until new management is in place.

Recovery from Season-Ending Injury

The Maple Leafs star suffered a knee injury on March 12 during a game against the Anaheim Ducks, when he was hit by Radko Gudas. Matthews underwent surgery on March 19 and has recently progressed beyond needing crutches. "I'll be ready by next season and have a pretty normal summer for the most part," he assured reporters.

When questioned about the controversial hit that ended his season, Matthews responded diplomatically. "I think you probably know how I felt about the hit," he said with a chuckle, noting that Gudas had reached out to him privately.

Addressing Organizational Instability

Matthews acknowledged the frequent changes in leadership during his tenure with Toronto, which could see him working with his fourth general manager and possibly fourth head coach. "I don't think that's completely abnormal," he observed, comparing the situation to other NHL teams. "Unfortunately, when we don't do that well enough and we don't meet those goals and expectations, people are let go, lose their jobs, and there's change."

Despite the challenges, Matthews expressed confidence in the team's core players and their ability to rebound. "I believe in the guys in this room and the people that we have here," he stated. "I think we're all hopeful that this is like a one-off."

Looking Ahead to Next Season

Matthews finished the season with 53 points (27 goals and 26 assists) in 60 games, below his usual offensive production. He maintained a positive relationship with head coach Craig Berube, despite the team's struggles. "I have a great relationship with Chief and I have a ton of respect for him," Matthews said of Berube.

When asked about Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment's plans to incorporate artificial intelligence into team operations, Matthews showed cautious interest. "I think AI is a big, very vague kind of statement," he noted. "I think there's a lot of data that we have now with technology with AI that can be used for a lot of positive things."

As the Maple Leafs enter an offseason of transition, Matthews' comments highlight both the challenges facing the franchise and the captain's determination to lead the team back to competitiveness.
