The Toronto Marlies have provided a significant opportunity for two promising young talents from the Maple Leafs organization, signing forwards Tyler Hopkins and Harry Nansi to amateur tryouts for the remainder of the 2025-26 season. This move comes as both players recently concluded their Ontario Hockey League campaigns, with their teams exiting in the first round of the playoffs.
Prospects Poised for Professional Development
Hopkins, a 19-year-old centre from Campbellville, Ontario, was drafted by the Maple Leafs in the third round, 86th overall, in the 2025 NHL draft. During the 2025-26 OHL season, split between the Guelph Storm and Kingston Frontenacs, he tallied an impressive 50 points, comprising 25 goals and 25 assists in 56 games. In the playoffs, he contributed two goals despite the Storm being swept by the Windsor Spitfires.
Nansi, an 18-year-old right winger from Nepean, Ontario, was selected in the fifth round, 153rd overall, by the Leafs in the same draft. He showcased notable growth this season, recording 56 points with 13 goals and 43 assists in 67 games for the Owen Sound Attack. This marked a substantial improvement from his previous season, where he had only 23 points in 67 games. However, in the playoffs, he was held scoreless as the Attack were outscored 35-3 by the Flint Firebirds in a four-game sweep.
Marlies' Current Season Context
The Marlies, who are navigating a challenging phase with four consecutive regulation losses, currently occupy fourth place in the American Hockey League's North Division. With two weeks left in the regular season, they have yet to secure a playoff spot. Their next game is scheduled for Wednesday, hosting Utica at the Coca-Cola Coliseum with a 10:45 a.m. start time.
This signing allows Hopkins and Nansi to gain valuable professional experience and potentially contribute to the Marlies' push for postseason contention, while continuing their development under the Maple Leafs' umbrella.
