Maple Leafs Awe-Struck by Islanders Rookie Matthew Schaefer's Remarkable NHL Start

The Toronto Maple Leafs are not at a loss for words when it comes to discussing Matthew Schaefer, but they certainly take a moment to find the right ones. The 18-year-old defenceman for the New York Islanders has been turning heads across the National Hockey League with a debut season that defies expectations.

Praise from Peers and Coaches

Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly admitted on Tuesday morning, ahead of the game between the Leafs and Islanders at Scotiabank Arena, that he doesn't fully comprehend Schaefer's rapid rise. "He's had a great start. When there's hype around a player the way there was with him, it's often hard to live up to that," Rielly said, highlighting the challenge Schaefer has overcome.

Islanders coach Patrick Roy, when asked where the team would be without Schaefer, half-jokingly replied that he "didn't want to think about that." The Islanders are currently in the thick of the playoff race in the Eastern Conference, holding third place in the Metropolitan Division, thanks in part to Schaefer's contributions.

A Generational Talent Emerges

Leafs centre John Tavares, who was the first pick in the 2009 draft by the Islanders, knows all about the pressure of high expectations. He praised Schaefer's performance, stating, "(Schaefer is) doing things that only a handful of players have done. It's extremely, extremely impressive. He's not just a franchise player, he has put himself in the conversation of a generational type of talent."

Schaefer, the No. 1 pick in last year's draft, started his NHL career with a six-game point streak and was third in rookie scoring before Tuesday, including 20 goals. Despite breaking his collarbone at the world junior championship last winter, which limited him to just 17 games for the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League in 2024-25, he has adapted swiftly to the NHL.

Adapting to the NHL Pace

Schaefer acknowledged the adjustments required in the league, noting, "Guys are a lot bigger, stronger and faster. Whether (Connor) McDavid is coming down toward you one night super fast or a guy that's a little bit heavier and can really lay his body into you, you have to know who's on the ice at all times and definitely have your head up."

He emphasized the importance of awareness to avoid dangerous hits, showcasing his maturity beyond his years.

Reliability in All Situations

Before Tuesday's game, Schaefer was averaging 24 minutes and 21 seconds of ice time per game, ranking among the top 15 NHL defencemen. Paired with veteran Ryan Pulock since November, he has become a reliable player in all situations. Coach Roy highlighted his defensive prowess, saying, "We knew he had the offensive skills, but the way he has been defending has been pretty impressive. When the rush comes against us, he's gapping so well, he has a great stick."

Innate Hockey Intelligence

Leafs coach Craig Berube pointed out Schaefer's natural abilities that set him apart. "It's his hockey IQ and his speed more than anything," Berube said. "A young kid coming in the league like this, to be able to do what he's doing, you have to have a very high hockey IQ and you have to have ability. His skating ability is off the charts."

Berube added that not all players possess such innate skills, making structure and predictability crucial for many, whereas Schaefer can create opportunities independently.

Returning to His Roots

Growing up attending Leafs games at Scotiabank Arena, Schaefer felt a sense of nostalgia playing his first NHL game in the building. "It's awesome coming back to the roots a little bit," he said. His father, Todd, has video of him cheering on the Leafs from the stands, adding a personal touch to the occasion.

Despite the headlines, Schaefer remains focused on the team's goals. "Whatever the headlines are, you have to focus on what we got going on in this room. It's not just about me. We have a great team," he stated, demonstrating his team-first attitude.

As the NHL season progresses, Matthew Schaefer continues to impress with his talent, work ethic, and humility, solidifying his status as one of the league's most promising young stars.
