NBA Star Luke Kornet Voices Opposition to Atlanta Hawks' Strip Club Promotion

San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet has publicly urged the Atlanta Hawks to reconsider their decision to promote the landmark Atlanta strip club Magic City at an upcoming NBA game. In a blog post on Medium, Kornet expressed his concerns, stating that such a promotion would cast a poor reflection on the league and disrespect women.

Kornet's Call for Respect and Protection of Women

Kornet emphasized that the NBA should strive to protect and esteem women, many of whom contribute significantly to the league's success. He wrote, "We should promote an atmosphere that is protective and respectful of the daughters, wives, sisters, mothers, and partners that we know and love." He argued that allowing the promotion to proceed would make the NBA community complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women.

Concerns Over Abuse and Inappropriate Environment

While Kornet did not criticize women working in adult entertainment, he highlighted that such environments often expose women to abuse, harassment, and violence. He noted, "Regardless of how a woman finds her way into the adult entertainment industry, many in this space experience abuse to which they should never be subjected." Kornet also mentioned that other NBA players share his concerns, particularly since the promotion is part of an all-ages event.

Hawks' Promotion Details and Backlash

The Atlanta Hawks announced the promotion last week, featuring a performance by Atlanta rapper T.I., chicken wings from Magic City, and a hoodie for purchase. The collaboration is supported by Jami Gertz, the Hawks' principal owner, who executive produced a docuseries on the club's cultural significance. However, Kornet and others argue that celebrating a strip club does not align with providing a safe, family-friendly environment for basketball fans.

Kornet concluded by urging the Hawks to cancel the event, stressing the importance of maintaining the NBA's integrity and respect for all community members.
