Johannes Klaebo Makes History with Ninth Olympic Gold Medal in Cross-Country Skiing
Norwegian cross-country skiing sensation Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo has etched his name into the annals of Winter Olympic history by capturing his ninth gold medal, setting a new record for the most golds won at the Winter Games. The 29-year-old athlete achieved this milestone on Sunday in Tesero, Italy, during the men's 4 x 7.5-kilometer relay at the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics.
Record-Breaking Performance in the Relay
Klaebo anchored Norway's relay team to victory, securing his fourth gold medal of the 2026 Games. This triumph propelled him past the previous record of eight gold medals, which he had shared with three retired Norwegian legends: cross-country skiers Marit Bjoergen and Bjorn Daehlie, and biathlete Ole Einar Bjoerndalen. Now, Klaebo stands alone at the pinnacle of Winter Olympic achievement.
"I like the sound of that! It's a pretty nice title," Klaebo remarked jubilantly after the race. "But it's special to do this together with this group. In Norway, winning the relay is what really matters—and today we all delivered."
A Flawless and Celebratory Race
Klaebo's performance in the relay was both masterful and charismatic. He executed a flawless race, appearing casual as he slowed down before the finish line to wave to cheering supporters. Norway completed the event in 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 24.5 seconds, clinching the gold medal.
France continued its strong showing at the Games, finishing in second place with a time 22.2 seconds behind Norway. Italy claimed the bronze medal, trailing by 47.9 seconds, much to the delight of the home crowd.
Team Spirit and Seasonal Success
Reflecting on the season and the relay victory, Klaebo emphasized the camaraderie and enjoyment within the Norwegian team. "We've had so much fun—both here and at training camps throughout the year. It's been a great season. Today, even though everyone was nervous, there was still a relaxed atmosphere," he shared.
Italy's Emotional Bronze Medal Finish
Italy's third-place finish was particularly poignant, anchored by Federico Pellegrino, who is competing in his final season. Celebrating with fans, Pellegrino danced to Italian pop classics played on a trumpet, creating a memorable moment for the home audience.
"This is something that I was dreaming of for a long time," Pellegrino expressed. "I think two years ago, when I started to think about the home Olympics and see teammates increase in their level, the dream became a goal and today we achieved it. It's something! Maybe the thing that I'm the most proud of in my career."
Other Team Performances
Despite a strong start, the United States finished in sixth place, behind Finland and Canada. This outcome highlighted the competitive nature of the event and the high stakes at the Olympic level.
Klaebo's record-setting achievement not only cements his legacy as one of the greatest Winter Olympians of all time but also underscores Norway's dominance in cross-country skiing. His ninth gold medal is a testament to his skill, dedication, and the unwavering support of his team.
