The undrafted native of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, has rapidly ascended the organizational depth chart following Toronto's recent trades of third and fourth-line centers Nicholas Roy and Scott Laughton. This strategic move by management has opened significant ice time for Quillan, who has responded with seven appearances dating back to a brief stint last season.
In his latest recall from the Toronto Marlies, Quillan has logged approximately nine minutes of ice time in consecutive games, demonstrating his growing role within the team structure. Coach Craig Berube, who has faced criticism for favoring veterans over rookies like Easton Cowan throughout the season, appears increasingly willing to extend Quillan's responsibilities.
Earning Coach's Trust Through Special Teams
During Saturday's matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning, despite the lopsided score, Berube deployed Quillan in four separate penalty-killing situations. This strategic adjustment represents a conscious effort to reduce Auston Matthews' special teams workload while the captain navigates an eleven-game goal-scoring drought.
"I'm just looking to prove myself, play well this year and hopefully get a chance to be on the team next year," Quillan stated regarding his current opportunity. The young forward has embraced his penalty-killing duties, noting: "Being on the penalty kill helps me find my game. I feel I can use my speed, use my stick to create turnovers and bottle up pucks. I'm thankful for that opportunity."

At even strength, Quillan has centered a line between Steven Lorentz and Calle Jarnkrok, working to establish chemistry and contribute defensively. Though still seeking his first NHL point after accumulating 70 points across 105 American Hockey League games with the Marlies and scoring a career-high 19 goals during his 2022-23 season with Quinnipiac University, Quillan understands his immediate priorities.
"Mostly I'm trying to keep it simple," Quillan explained regarding his approach. "I'm trying to learn from every opportunity, make something happen with it, use it to make myself better. Now that my time has come, I look to make the most of it, building the chemistry, getting in hard on the forecheck."

Berube has taken particular notice of Quillan's development, seeking out the young forward during Saturday's morning skate to offer compliments following his visible effort during Thursday's 6-2 loss to the New York Rangers. "That means everything to me," Quillan responded. "When the coach has your back, you want to have his. I want to do everything I can to help my teammates and help him."
The coach returned the praise after Saturday's game, stating: "He works and he has really good feet. I was happy with his game all around again." Such positive feedback has been scarce for Maple Leafs players recently, making Quillan's emergence particularly noteworthy.
