Senators Suffer Critical Shootout Loss to Penguins, Fall Out of Playoff Position
The Ottawa Senators experienced a devastating setback in their playoff pursuit, falling 4-3 in a shootout to the Pittsburgh Penguins at Canadian Tire Centre on Thursday night. The loss dropped the Senators one point behind the New York Islanders for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, though Ottawa maintains a game in hand.
Ullmark's Heroic Performance Wasted in Defeat
Goaltender Linus Ullmark delivered one of his finest performances of the season, making 35 saves against relentless Pittsburgh pressure. Ullmark was particularly spectacular in the second period, robbing Anthony Mantha on the goal line and making three consecutive stops on Bryan Rust, Noel Acciari, and Mantha again in the final seconds of the frame.
"Ullmark was bombarded all game, forced to make several 10-bell saves," according to game reports. Despite his heroics, Pittsburgh's Egor Chinakhov and Ben Kindel each scored five-hole on Ullmark in the shootout to secure the victory.
Senators' Offensive Highlights
Drake Batherson led Ottawa's offensive effort with two goals, including the game-tying marker at 3:58 of the third period. Batherson tapped in a Tim Stutzle rebound at the edge of the crease for his fifth two-goal game in his past 14 contests. The Penguins challenged for goalie interference, but the goal was confirmed upon video review.
Tim Stutzle recorded two assists, including the secondary helper on Batherson's first-period power play goal that gave him his 400th NHL point. Nick Cousins also scored for the Senators, who had entered the game riding a four-game winning streak.
Game Flow and Turning Points
The Senators opened scoring at 4:28 of the first period when Brady Tkachuk made a move around Parker Wotherspoon on the power play and fed a cross-crease pass to Batherson for a one-timer into a partially open net.
Pittsburgh responded with goals from Rickard Rakell (two) and Erik Karlsson. Karlsson's second-period wrist shot beat a screened Ullmark blocker side from the top of the right circle to tie the game at 2-2. Rakell gave Pittsburgh its first lead at 1:43 of the third period with a one-timer during a 5-on-3 power play.
The Senators' second period proved particularly problematic, as they were outshot 16-6 and largely out-chanced by the Penguins. Ottawa's typically energetic play was uncharacteristically lethargic during this critical stretch.
Playoff Implications
With the loss, Ottawa now sits at 38-24-10 with crucial games remaining in the regular season. The New York Islanders, who defeated the Dallas Stars 2-1 on Thursday, now hold the final wild card position by one point. The Senators maintain a game in hand, but Thursday's defeat represents a significant missed opportunity to control their playoff destiny.
The Penguins' victory was notable for their successful shootout performance and their continued struggles with coach's challenges. Pittsburgh remains a league-worst 0-for-9 in goalie interference-related challenges this season after their unsuccessful challenge on Batherson's third-period goal.
