Saskatchewan Huskies Women's Basketball Team Achieves Historic 50-Game Winning Streak

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's basketball team is riding an unprecedented wave of success as they head into the Canada West playoffs this weekend. The reigning U Sport national champions have not lost a single game since November 2, 2024, marking an incredible 50-game winning streak that has captured the attention of basketball fans across the country.

A Remarkable Journey of Dominance

This extraordinary run began after their last defeat, a narrow 65-63 loss to the Calgary Dinos nearly sixteen months ago. Since that moment, the Huskies have dominated their competition throughout the entire 2025 season and have continued their winning ways into 2026 without a single blemish on their record.

Longtime head coach Lisa Thomaidis expressed amazement at her team's accomplishment. "I don't think it's really sunk in," Thomaidis admitted. "Every time you think this group has done it all and what more can they accomplish, then you kind of go, 'holy crap!, 50'? It's not been on our radar, at all, but then when you get to a milestone number like 50, it kind of hits home."

Statistical Excellence and Team Depth

The Huskies' success is built on both offensive firepower and defensive prowess. The team has demonstrated remarkable consistency, averaging approximately 85 points per game while maintaining their status as the top offensive and defensive team in the country.

Several players have contributed significantly to this historic run:

  • Gage Grassick, the graduating fifth-year senior guard, finished the regular season sixth among Canada West scorers with an average of 15.8 points per game
  • Logan Reider and Maya Flindall followed closely behind with 15.1 points per game each
  • Ella Murphy Wiebe ranked second in Canada West with an impressive 53.5 shooting percentage
  • Tea DeMong demonstrated defensive excellence with 50 steals and 18 blocked shots

Playoff Preparation and Recent Additions

As the Huskies prepare for their quarterfinal game this Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Physical Activity Complex, they await the winner of the play-in game between the Fraser Valley Cascades and Mount Royal Cougars. Saskatchewan previously faced Mount Royal earlier this season, securing decisive victories of 89-46 and 68-51.

Coach Thomaidis acknowledged the challenge of maintaining their championship level from last season. "This is the best offensive team, in terms of putting up points per game," she noted. "We've been over 100 points a number of times this season. It's just been so fun to see them showcase all of their hard work."

The team received an additional boost in January when guard Andrea Dodig decided to return for a final year of eligibility, adding valuable experience and depth to an already formidable roster.

As the Huskies continue their pursuit of another national championship, their 50-game winning streak stands as a testament to their dedication, skill, and team chemistry. The entire university community and basketball enthusiasts across Saskatchewan eagerly await their playoff performance, hoping to witness the continuation of this remarkable athletic achievement.
