Hockey Parents Flip Out at U12 Game in Toronto, Climb Glass to Confront On-Ice Official
Adults appearing to support the Vaughan Panthers were filmed yelling and scrambling over the boards during a U12 hockey game this past weekend at Canlan Ice Sports in York, Toronto. The incident, captured on video and shared on social media, has drawn widespread criticism for setting a poor example for young players.
The video shows a man in a black jacket and hat climbing over the boards from outside the rink, pointing and yelling at someone on the ice. A woman attempted to restrain him, but he swatted her hand away. Another man in team apparel and a red hat was seen giving the finger to the person filming, then slamming both palms against the glass twice before shouting toward the ice. A blonde woman also approached, calling those on the ice "animals" and "sick" in the head.
The clip was posted on Instagram by Crisp Hockey Training, which noted the incident occurred prior to their game on Saturday. The caption read: "U12 SPRING HOCKEY this past weekend prior to our game this past Saturday. What is wrong with people?" The video was later shared on X by Clanko Media, prompting a flurry of reactions.
Social media users were quick to condemn the behavior. One X user wrote: "Way to teach your kids how to act and communicate." Another commented: "That poor wife having to pull her husband off the glass. Family memories." A third joked: "Wish my dad had this attitude when I was growing up. I’d be in the show for sure!" Some users specifically called out the Vaughan Panthers organization, with one Instagram user stating: "Vaughan parents have been known as glass bangers for a couple decades. Under 9 & younger they like standing in the corners and yelling instructions the kids cannot understand." Another replied: "Surprise, surprise look at the organization involved."
The Vaughan Panthers hockey organization did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, the team's website outlines a mission "to promote sportsmanship, teamwork, respect and dedication to the sport through discipline and effort." The rules of operations state that parents and guardians "are expected to conduct themselves generally in a manner which best exemplifies the standards and values of the Association" and "must demonstrate respect, courtesy and civility in all dealings." It also notes that "provocative and inflammatory types of behaviour, including the use of profanity, threats and verbal or physical confrontations shall not be tolerated." The team provides a link to the GTHL Respect in Sport website for parents.
It remains unclear what sparked the incident, as the video does not show the preceding events. The footage has sparked a broader conversation about parental conduct at youth sports events, with many calling for stricter enforcement of codes of conduct.
