Leon Draisaitl Set for Oilers Playoff Opener After Knee Injury Recovery

Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl is preparing to make his return to the ice for Game 1 of the NHL playoffs against the Anaheim Ducks, following a month-long absence due to a suspected knee ligament tear. The German center has progressed from questionable to probable status, demonstrating his trademark determination throughout the recovery process.

Practice Progress Signals Readiness

After several days practicing in a grey fifth-line jersey during team skates, Draisaitl was observed skating up and down the ice in a regular white jersey during Friday's session. He was positioned at center between his usual winger Vasily Podkolzin and Kasperi Kapanen, indicating his imminent return to game action.

"We're getting him as close as possible to game-ready and to do that we're putting him with players in practice he would most likely play with," explained Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch following Friday's practice session.

The team has one more full skate scheduled for Sunday before Monday's playoff opener, with a possible morning skate option also under consideration. Knoblauch noted that Draisaitl has frequently played with Podkolzin and Kapanen throughout this season and last, suggesting this combination could form a line during the playoffs.

Medical Clearance Pending

While Draisaitl appears physically ready, he still requires official medical clearance from the team's medical staff. The 29-year-old forward, who finished the regular season with 97 points before suffering the injury from a hit by Ozzy Wiesblatt in a March 15 game against Nashville, has been described as looking "effortless on the ice" during recent team activities.

"That doesn't say the whole story of what's underneath, but it's up to the doctors to say he's ready, that he's not at risk of damaging something. We'll wait for that," Knoblauch stated, referencing Draisaitl's appearance during a team photo session several weeks prior.

The coach had previously indicated Draisaitl would return sometime during Round 1, but based on his current skating performance, the timeline appears accelerated toward Game 1 rather than Games 3 or 4, barring any unexpected setbacks.

Dickinson's Status Remains Uncertain

While Draisaitl's return seems imminent, the situation for forward Jason Dickinson appears less certain. Dickinson did not skate with the main group on Friday and has been sidelined for ten days after taking a shot off his leg during a game in San Jose.

"He was on the ice on his own, skating, today. I saw our training staff afterwards and I do expect him on the ice for practice with the whole team on Sunday," Knoblauch reported regarding Dickinson's status.

The coach emphasized that Dickinson's availability represents a medical decision rather than a pain tolerance issue, creating additional lineup uncertainties as the playoffs approach.

Lineup Configurations and Goaltending Depth

Knoblauch faces several lineup decisions with multiple players at varying stages of recovery. The current configuration includes:

  • A first line featuring Connor McDavid centering Matt Savoie and Zach Hyman
  • A fourth line with Josh Samanski between Colton Dach and Trent Frederic
  • Efforts to maintain familiar forward pairings on the remaining lines

"We've got a lot of balls up in the air. We don't know about Leon, if Dickinson can play Game 1. We have some question marks," acknowledged the Oilers coach.

In goaltending news, Calvin Pickard has returned from AHL affiliate Bakersfield to serve as the Oilers' third goaltender during the NHL postseason. Pickard will only dress if either Connor Ingram or Tristan Jarry sustains an injury, but his return allows him to reunite with family in Edmonton after his wife remained in the city following his waiver clearance.
